Tour Description

La Fortuna Waterfall Hike

With water cascading from 75 meters (245 ft) into an emerald green watering hole, it is no wonder the La Fortuna Waterfall hike is one of the most popular things to do in Arenal. Let our expert naturalist guides take you to explore one of the most famous waterfalls in Costa Rica on this super fun eco tour in La Fortuna.

La Fortuna Waterfall Park

The La Fortuna Waterfall Park is just a short 20-minute drive from downtown La Fortuna. Once we arrive to the park, your guide will take you to the entrance to the park. Before you even enter, you can sometimes find a troop of monkeys waiting to greet you. One of the things we like most about this tour is that part of the La Fortuna Waterfall entrance fee is actually used to support the well-being of the local community in this region. The waterfall park has restrooms, a souvenir shop and a beautiful observation platform where you can get some great photos of the La Fortuna Waterfall from the top.

Guided Hike to La Fortuna Waterfall

Once you have taken in the beauty of the waterfall from the top, it’s time to descend down. 300 meters down that is, to the base of the waterfall. Not to worry, your guide will lead you slowly down the well paved path of over 500 steps until we reach the pools below. There are nooks & benches carved into the trail. So, you will have places to pause to take in the beauty while your guide explains the importance of the region which is the protected territory of Arenal-Monteverde. Your guide will also point out the fascinating rock formations of the high basalt columns that formed the La Fortuna Waterfall. Once we reach the bottom, you will have time to explore, take some amazing photos. and even go for a swim! Be aware, that is some fresh mountain water. Swimming in La Fortuna Waterfalls can be a bit on the chilly side.

Of course, after going down all those steps, we inevitably need to hike back up. This is the La Fortuna Waterfall HIKE after all. Again, we will take our time ascending the 500+ steps back to the top, pausing to rest as needed. The spray from the splashing waterfall makes for a nice refreshing mist as you climb. At the top, your guide will provide you with fresh fruits and water to replenish.

Insider Tip: A lot of tourists do the La Fortuna Waterfall hike on their own, but going with a guide makes it so much better. That is a lot of stairs. So, the guide and their wealth of knowledge about the area, and their keen eyes for spotting wildlife, is the perfect distraction. The first time I did it on my own and it was pretty, but short and sweet. The second time I went with the guide, I took my time and enjoyed every part of the experience that much more. Plus, the guide helped me find the perfect angle for the best photos of the falls. And if you want to really make your experience special, book a private tour and keep the guide all to yourself!
